Earlier this year it seemed like I was always hearing about earthquakes happening all over the world. Most notably being the major earthquakes in Haiti and Chile. Is it just me or have there been more earthquakes this year than normal?
This morning at about 5am I had just gotten back in the bed from using the bathroom when everything shook. For a split second I thought it was a train (we can often hear the freight trains in the distance), however, it didn't last long enough only a few seconds.
When we turned on the news this morning they confirmed that there had indeed been a small earthquake (magnitude 3.6) in Germantown, Maryland which is about 30 miles from my home.
An earthquake in Maryland is a rare occurence. I've lived in the area for 18 years and this is only the second one I can remember. Growing up in Jamaica I can remember experiencing at least 4 or 5 small earthquakes.
No matter the magnitude, there is something very unsettling about the earth shaking below you.
Hopefully this will be the last earthquake that I get to experience.

FINALLY! A DOCTOR WHO MAKES HOUSE-CALLS!
Information deemed reliable but not guaranteed!

Stacey Ann,
Whew! I slept right through this one! And Germantown isn't all that far from DC.
Stacey: We had a larger than normal one here also...they usually don't bother me but this one did....It was later in the day and so I had an unusual glass of wine to settle my nerves!
God bless and am glad your OK.
Patricia - I think I might have slept through it too had I not just gotten back into the bed
Kara - I mean it feels emotionally unsettling
Jane - They are hard to get used to
Paige - Thanks, all is well.
Isn't that strange????
Stacy:
I awoke thinking it was the neighbors truck ( he blow the head gasket the night before).
The USGS say it was the first of such magatude within 30 miles of DC since they have beeen recoding such events - but failed to say when they started.
Stacey-Ann, Thanks for the post. Gone are the days of earthquakes being relegated to the west coast
Linda - very strange
Bob - I'm sure they've been recording for a long time
William - I would hope they don't become commonplace on this side
