Belmont Elementary (Olney, MD) Makes National News

Belmont Elementary in Olney, MD has been profiled as a model for an anti-bullying program in our schools.

Belmont Elementary understands that the key to stopping bullying is to empower kids to not watch when someone is being bullied but instead to intervene.

In this day and age where schools are usually in the news for negative reasons it's great to see a local elementary school making the news for the right reasons.

I don't like bullying, but what you really need is parents to teach kids right and teachers willing to step in and not let it happen.  I don't like that good manners, responsible parenting and teaching is now a "Program," it should just be how we live.

Did you happen to see a tv program last week where a news crew secretly taped kids (with their parents' permission) in various scenarios, one of which involved bullying?  A couple of the girls really stepped up to the plate and tried to stop the bullying - it was heartwarming to see some kids, at least, trying to do the right thing.  This is apparently a big problem in many areas, which is a real shame.

Joni - my kids used to go there, its a great school

Gene - Unfortunately, it's the way of the times

Susan - That might have been the same thing at Belmont - they videotaped the kids with actors playing the bully & the victim.
