Have Airlines Fees Gone Too Far?

I am trying to book an airline ticket to go to Jamaica for my friend's funeral.

First of all there are NO non-stop flights from the DC area to Jamaica anymore.  All options require me to connect through Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, New York, Dallas, or Toronto.  Toronto!!!  I have to fly up to Toronto to fly back down to Kingston - crazy!!!!

I finally find a flight that leaves DC at 10am and gets me in to Kingston at 4pm (it would be a 3 hour flight if it was direct) connecting through Fort Lauderdale on Spirit Airlines.  It's $110 cheaper than a similar flight on the only other airline that seems to be making this trip, American Airlines.

I am only going to be gone for 3 days so I don't plan on checking any bags.  Guess what?  Spirit charges $30 per carry-on!!!!!  It's the same price to carry on or check a bag.

That really made me mad. How are people supposed to travel without a change of clothes?

I proceed with the booking and now I have to pay money to select a seat.  Seats range in price from $10 to $40 depending on where you want to sit.

Seriously?  I can't carry any clothes and I can't sit either?  I bet they are going to have a coin operated toilet next!!!

When I factor in the bag fee going and coming back, that $60 and then add $40 for the seats for each leg of the flight we are now only $10 off of the American Airlines flight.

Naturally I am booking the American Airlines flight because they gave me the realistic picture of the price from the start rather than making the flight look cheaper than it really was.

Sometimes it makes no sense at all.

Discount airlines are not a discount any longer... if they keep merging look for more fees and hire costs with less competition. i am sorry to hear about your friend, have a safe flight...

Going there for 3 days?. . I would wear all the clothes on and climb aboard with no carry-ons!

Seriously, I recently went in a long vacation and we spend $120 each way TO PAY FOR OUR LUGGAGES!

Flying is an expensive business. We can pay the real fare or pay the discounted price with the per... fees. I hope you experienced God's peace during your trip

How frustrating.  Spirit is disguised as a discount airliner, but get you in the end with all of their add on fees.  I'd go with Amercian as well.

Stacey Ann,

On the bright side...you're going to Jamaica. Being home for a couple of days will take the sting away from the flying experience. Enjoy.

Stacey Ann - I only fly airlines where all the fees are stated up front, especially the so called 'junk" fees. Listen to Clark Howard, every day he finishes the show with airline ticket info. My condolences to you and the family of your friend.

Watch out, they probably will soon start charging for toilet usage.  That is when I start wearing Depends ;-(

Hi Stacey-Ann ~ I feel your pain. I had a real fun time figuring things out for my recent flight to the UK. The fees are ridiculous. I have to admit though, paying for the seat definitely goes too far!

One thing I learned on my trip is that I will check in as much as possible in on my next trip. Getting through security was a nightmare.

Tim - No sense!

Scott - The lack of competition is very sad.  Thanks

Fernando - I'm going with whatever can fit in my handbag.  I'll wear my mom's clothes while i'm there.

Doug - I just wish they would give the real fare up front

Joe - The American flight went up

Rich - I am looking forward to seeing my family despite the circumstances

Mike - I wish I had more options so I didn't have to fly these

Don - I'm expecting that change any minute now

Denise - Security is a pain if you have too much stuff.

I have to admit that I would probably not book with an airline that had all those hidden fees.  It seems unethical to me.

I can understand charging to check more than one bag, or for a "premium seat", but to imply that you can fly for X price, and then demand $30 for a carryon and $10-$50 for a seat is dishonest.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your friend.  I hope you had a safe trip.
