Despite the occasion it was good to be home

I flew to Jamaica on Thursday to attend my friend's funeral.

i have lived in the Maryland/Virginia areas since 1992.  When I first moved here I used to fantasize about my return to Jamaica.  However, I no longer have any real desire to live in Jamaica - Maryland is home for me now.

Despite that, I noticed on Thursday that the minute the plane touched down in Kingston I felt an incredible surge of emotion.  It's hard to explain but it's a feeling of belonging.  The feeling of connection is incredibly strong.

As I drive home from the airport I know many would see poverty, I see resilience.  I am in awe of the tenacity of the Jamaican spirit.  For such a small island we have made a huge mark on the world.  Our culture, music, food, athletes make us larger than our geography would indicate.

Despite my love for the Washington, DC area Jamaica will always have a special place in my heart.  It is, after all, the land of my birth!!!!

I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your friend, but I am glad you got to go home for a few days.

Now, let's not forget the Jamaican Bobsled Team - they truly exemplified the Jamaican spirit!

I've been missing you. So glad you are back home safely and that you were able to go to the funeral. Just for the record, you "belong" here too! Welcome home!

Hi Stacey-Ann ~ I know what you're talking about with that surge of emotion, I had it last month too. I think knowing and appreciating where our roots are is a big part of our success abroad. After all, it's part of who we are.

I have never been to Jamaica, but it's right at the top of my list for places to visit. The next time I go on vacation and it's not to my homeland, it will be Jamaica. Of course I come from the UK - a place where reggae music is almost as popular as in Jamaica itself. (I'm a big UB40 fan myself, they probably helped make reggae as big as it is in the UK and Europe back in the seventies).

Dr.Stacey Ann I really liked the video. I even liked two of the girls in the video-LOL. But on a serious note,I am sooo sorry about the loss of your dear friend. Your friend is at a much better place than here. Also who is singing that song by the way? Great post.

Susan - The bobsled team absolutely is a testament to the Jamaican spirit

Joni - thanks, your comments made my day :-)

Gerry - Glad they liked it.  Were they honeymooning?

Denise - so true - it helped make us who we are.  Hope you get there soon. I'm hoping to make it to the UK

Lanre - Sounds like we need to find you a Jamaican girl :-)  The song is by Eric Donaldson

Dr. Stacey,

I am sorry to hear of your loss. I guess the saying home is where heart rings true. I agree that one thing l love about Jamiaca is the people, the love they show no matter the circumstances.

Akil - The people are definitely amazing.
