I love Kenny Rogers, and other little known facts

Kenny Rogers is coming to the Washington, DC area on December 19.  I LOVE Kenny Rogers and I mean LOVE.  My dad is a huge country music lover and Kenny Rogers was the one that my brother and I liked too so the music was in heavy rotation in our house when we were growing up.

When I began the lobby to find a date to the concert (my husband refuses to go) I was constantly met with "You like Kenny Rogers, but you are Jamaican?"

One of the beauty of people is the complexity they bring.  Just because I am Jamaican doesn't mean I only like reggae music.  As a matter of fact, Jamaicans in general tend to have very eclectic music tastes.  My brother has seen Kenny Rogers perform twice in Jamaica.

Despite the shock of some people I was able to rustle up several friends to go with me and so now I am sooooo excited to see Kenny Rogers in person in a few weeks.

Some other random facts:

  • I love some other country music too - Sugarland's Stuck on You, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, & even Marty Robbins.
  • I also love most songs on the sappy love song channels (Air Supply is a special favorite).
  • I can't dance (two left feet).  The island rhythm skipped over me completely.
  • I don't drink or smoke (cigarettes or weed) and I don't like spicy food (someone should take my Jamaican card away for that one).

I'm curious what random things might people not know about you?

I love Kenny Rogers also - you got to know when to hold'em....Ruby don't take your love to town was the first song I can remember of his.  It is funny about people expecting you to dance and to eat spicy food because of your heritage.  I am a Texan and I don't like Country music all that much.

Hi Stacey-Anne - I loved Kenny Rogers when he was with The First Edition.  He wasn't considered "country" then but was firmly in the folk/rock mode of the day.  I know I am dating myself, but thanks for jogging the memory!

I ended up liking country because we only have 3 radio stations that I can get in the Condo.

I started out listening to classic rock. After hearing "in a Godda da vida" at 6:00 in the MORNING, it was time for a change.

The second station was elevator music. Too many times of hearing Bobby Goldsboro sing "Honey" was enough to drive me nuts.

The only thing left was Country. I listen 101.3 Thunder Country here is the Florida Keys! I wish Jeff Foxworthy was still doing his count down!

I like Kenny Rogers too. I guess he is country, huh? I also like Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson (Free Willie!), and hold your breath, John Denver. Although I can take a pass on sappy stuff (OK I secretly love it) I do love songs/singers who have strong vocals which shocks some folks when they find out how much Journey I have on my iPod. Love my Steve Perry. The voice, the voice.

Suzanne - Ruby is one of my favorites

Peggy - I don't think he is hardcore country. I definitely see him as folksy

Kathy - I bet Jeff Foxworthy's countdown would have been hilarious

Tni - I like Journey too.

Are you sure your Jamacian? No Red Stripe, no jerk chicken. Funny thing my daughter went to Jamaica for her honey moon, she brought back some jerk spices, and a cook book. I love to cook, the book is VERY authentic, some of the ingredients are 1 cows hoof, 1 goat head. I am a very adventerous eater, but I am not sure about those ingredients.....have a great time at the show

Gerry - I actually like the taste of Red Stripe - does that count? I like jerk pork just not when it's too spicy :-) I am actually cooking ox-tails for dinner. Next time you are in town I'll have to supply you with some goat head soup.
