First Book Read in 2012 - 24 more to go to make my goal

Elizabeth The Queen: The Life Of A Modern MonarchElizabeth The Queen: The Life Of A Modern Monarch by Sally Bedell Smith
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As a child who grew up in one of the British commonwealth nations I have always found the pomp and circumstance of the monarchy fascinating. I enjoyed this book and really enjoyed learning more about the inner workings of the royal family.

There were times when I found the people in the book difficult to follow - all the different Dukes & Earls, etc could be quite confusing. Also, the politics of the many prime ministers was sometimes very distracting.

The book was decidedly pro-queen. It felt as though sometimes the author went out of her way to convince us that the queen was a nice person. This made some of the accounts seem to not ring true. The author was also very unfavorable in her descriptions of Diana while down playing some of the bad behavior of the other spouses. Charles' role in the demise of the marriage was significantly down played.

Loved the pictures throughout the book which helped to bring alive some of the stories.

Overall, an interesting read.

24 books. That's an awesome goal! I read 52 last year and I'm hoping for as many this year, but not getting there very quickly.

That is quite a goal for the year. I am a Royalist too, so I am sure I would enjoy it too.

Hi, Stacey.  I didn't count the books that I read last year, but you've inspired me to both count and write about those that I complete this year.  Thank you!

Your confusion is understanding...the Windsors are a "created" family name since Victoria married a German prince and the English wanted to distance themselves from their German roots before WWI

Phillip was a Greek prince in exile who took the name Mountbatten to become a suitable spouse for the future queen

Chris - I look forward to reading about them

Brian - It was an interesting read

Wallace - That part wasn't too bad it was all the other random Dukes, Duchesses, & Earls that I had a hard time keeping straight.

Oh I love your goal! I read 2 or 3 books a month on average so you can do it!
