Stress Relievers

These difficult economic times are causing large amounts of stress for many people.  Even in good times, the real estate transaction is frought with stress for all involved.  Its important to find some good (healthy) stress relievers to help you relax.

  • Journal/blog
  • Take a time out.
  • Take a bath/shower
  • Read
  • Exercise
  • Watch tv/play video games
  • Talk to friends
  • Listen to music
  • Yoga
  • Massage

It is important to note that what is stress relieving for one person may not work for another.  For example, when my husband is stressed he likes to clean.  I would rather be hit in the head than clean so that would not work for me.

The other really important thing to consider about stress relievers is that there are stress relievers that inadvertently cause more stress.  Consider these scenarios:

  1. I like to eat when i'm stressed.  I had a rough week so I eat lots of ice-cream.  At the end of the week I happen to step on the scale and I've gained weight.  Now that's an added stress on me.  Instead of alleviating stress i've created it.
  2. I like to shop when stressed.  After a really rough week I have a very good shopping spree.  Then at the end of the month the bill comes and I realize that I spent more than I should have.  Now once again, i've added stress to my life.

Stress relievers that are good in moderation but have the potential to be problematic:

  • Food
  • Shopping
  • Sex
  • Alcohol
  • Cigarettes
  • Time-off

Keep strong and we can all weather these tough times.

Wonderful informative post, and great reminders.  I work out every day, and it does get harder in the winter.  But, I feel so much better when it is done and off the list!

Oh how I would love to take a nice relaxing soak in a bubble bath :( We only have a shower the people before us removed the tub in the other bathroom and made it a closet.

One of my stress reliever is to write blogs and comments..   The best one for me is physical work to burn energy, not office work (sitting in front of computer to long creates stress for me).

A good game of Sudoku, A short getaway always helps me.  I also knit and have friends to call if it all gets to be too much!  Exercise also helps.

Stacey Ann - Nice post!  I look forward to playing tennis three times a week to get away.  All the best to you and your business.

I have it down on must-do: get a massage at a local spa. I can feel my back and neck tensing up. And when I become aware of it, I try to relax by thinking of that massage.

I will, I must, I have to!

Hi Stacey-Ann,  Sometimes I don't think we even know we are functioning ( or Not) under stress! Thank you for the advice and great information!

Great ideas.  I also include personal growth and development.  Meditation is great too.

Stacey-Ann - I like to read a book when I'm stressed.  However, when I'm stressed it's usually because I have too much to do with too little time...So, obviously I don't have the time to read...  :)

Stacey-Ann. Can I please have your husband? He likes to clean when he is stressed? Are you aware of how lucky you are?

Stacey-Ann-I think we all go through periods of stress. I have a stress ball someone gave me. When he gave it to me, I asked him what the ball was for and he said if I played with it, that it would releave my stress. I did not believe him, but it works. I start playing with it and squeezing it and I can picture someone's head instead of the ball. LOL  So if someone gets me upset, I can squeeze their head......LOL
