Kalico Productions - New Music Video

Last year I mentioned that my brother had recorded his first song. He has been working pretty hard to launch his music career. His love is in writing the music for songs and having artists sing songs on those rhythms.

The Jamaican reggae music scene is very competitive so it's not an easy road to success.

He's been doing well and has a few singles on his rhythms that are getting good airplay.

I wouldn't be a good big sister if I didn't share the new Kalico Productions video. Kalico productions consists of my brother Scott and my cousin Marc.

Scott isn't the person performing this song but the person is performing on a Kalico Productions rhythm.

My client indicated that breast cancer has been devastating to her family which is why she wanted her donation to go there. Since this disease has also been devastating to many I love as well, I was only too happy to be able to provide a small donation to help find a cure to this disease.

My paternal grandmother passed away from breast cancer in 1974. I never got the chance to meet her.
In September 2010 my childhood friend passed away at age 36.
Last summer my aunt Susan passed away.
Last October my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and I went home to be with her as she was recuperating from her mastectomy. She just completed her radiation treatment and is doing very well.

2012 has been a good year so far and I hope that it will continue to bring me many opportunities to make donations to some of the many worthy charities out there.

Fairwood Shopping Center - Wonderful Merchants!!!

I recently was involved in the planning of two community events that were held at the new Oak Creek Club in Upper Marlboro. For both I visited the Fairwood Shopping Center in Bowie, MD. This shopping center was a short drive from Oak Creek. I was amazed at how friendly and supporttive the merchants were. Almost everyone that I spoke to was more than willing to provide assistance where ever possible. Special thanks to:

Fairwood Cafe Liquor and Wine that donated 2 cases of beer to my golf tournament.
Suntrust Bank in the Safeway Supermarket who were helpful in setting up my checking accounts and also in supporting and making a donation to the golf tournament.
Marines recruiting who donated prizes.
Gold's Gym which donated a 3 month membership for us to use as an auction item.
Touch AV that donated gift cards.
KBQ that catered the event.

Thanks to all who helped but thanks in particular to these merchants who showed an interest in being a part of the local community and in giving back to a local charity. Without merchants like these, the events would not have been successful.

This book was read by one of my students in my Psychology of Women class. She brought it for me to read and I was excited to read it.

To say I was disappointed with this book would be generous. I thought this was an extreme trivialization of anorexia and the body image distortions that accompany it.

The story is told from the diary of the author as an 11 year old girl. However, I really don't believe that these are her actual diaries - it's a bit too neat to be completely authentic. Even if the diaries are real, for this book to be effective the author needed to discuss some of the emotional pain that accompanies anorexia and spend some time discussing her experiences with treatment and re-integration into the community and her family.

I would personally not recommend this book to anyone.

What's amazing is I read all these in one weekend! Definitely didn't get any work done.

Burned Alive: A Victim of the Law of Men by Souad
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a book read by one of my Psychology of Women students this semester. As someone who advocates for female equality there are parts of this story that are very difficult to read. It is disturbing to know that there are still parts of the world where women are treated as non-human. Souad grew up in a world where women didn't have opinions or values and even though she has lived out of that environment for many years that theme still runs very aggressively throughout this book. This was an eye opening but very sad book to read.

The Secrets Of Married Women by Carol Mason
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I only tried this book because it was cheap on the kindle (maybe even free, I can't remember). It was an entertaining read. The book is British and there were times when the dialogue may be difficult to follow if you are not familiar with British culture. I think the hardest part was that I didn't really find myself liking any of the characters so it was difficult to engage with their issues and to get emotionally connected with the novel.

$100 to Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

My client is walking in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in May 2012 and I was very happy to be able to support her.

Breast cancer touches so many lives that I am happy to be able to contribute to help find new treatment options.

I live in fear of breast cancer as I have watched many people I love battle this disease:

Hopefully Vanishing Loan Officers Are Not a New Trend

I've been working on a deal for months with a lovely first-time homebuyer. The deal has been anyting but typical and has had all kinds of random issues pop up on both sides of the transaction.

The loan officer has not been the most communicative throughout the process and often didn't return email or calls.

About 3 weeks ago, I sent an email to the loan officer and her processor and they both bounced back to me. I assumed it had been my error so I tried again - bounced back to me again!

Strange - VERY STRANGE!

It was late and I didn't want to call the loan officer but I did send her a text message letting her know the email wasn't working. Her response "that's because i'm no longer with XYZ Mortgage". WHAT?!?!?!

I asked her about this deal and she says "oh, it's staying at XYZ Mortgage".

She didn't give a contact at the mortgage company and turns out her processors were also no longer working there. Thankfully the title company had a contact so we finally got a hold of someone who had taken over the file.

I finally got an email from the loan officer last week proudly announcing that she was now with "ABC Mortgage". You would think a loan officer would let the people involved in active deals know if they were going to change companies.

We finally got that deal closed today.

After closing I sat down to send an email to a loan officer on another deal i'm working on only to get an "Out of Office" Autoreply message. The buyer called soon after - turns out the loan officer is no longer with his company either. I swear, he was there yesterday! Once again, loan officer gone in the blink of an eye.

That's 2 vanishing loan officers this month. What's going on?

Sometimes "Low Ball" Offers are actually perfectly reasonable

Recently there have been several blogs discussing low-ball offers and the agents that submit them.

As an agent who works primarily with buyers I find these discussions interesting because the comments and posts tend to suggest that the buyers are unrealistic and their agents unprofessional. Very few people even investigate the possibility that it is the sellers and their agents that are unrealistic.

I closed on a home that was listed for $200,000 over the price the buyers offered. When the buyers made their offer it was not because they were trying to steal a home or because I, as the buyer's agent didn't know what I was doing. Instead, the offer price was made because after reviewing the comps that was what the buyers thought was a reasonable offer.

At first glance the listing agent was not impressed with the offer and pointed out repeatedly that the offer was way too low.

Eventually with no other offers forth coming the sellers decided to accept the offer.

The home had been on the market for 9 months when we came along. At the time we saw it the house was on it's second agent and 4th or 5th price reduction. The final purchase price was a whopping $700,000 under the price the house first went on the market for.

In this scenario I firmly believe that I did my job, I helped my buyer get the home they wanted at a price they were comfortable paying. Just because it was listed for an unrealistic price doesn't mean that we have to pay the unrealistic price.

CDA Loan Requirements - Maryland mortgage options

All Community Development Administration (CDA) loan products have fixed interest rates and are available with down payment and closing cost assistance.

CDA loans are for owner occupants who are first time homebuyers. In certain target geographical areas the buyer does not need to be a first time homebuyer and the purchase price limits are higher. Townhomes, detached & semi-deatached homes, and condos are eligible for CDA funding.

Borrowers will be required to attend Homebuyer Education Workshops.
