Amy True Guest Post – Disneyland is for Dreamers
Because of my bio, people frequently ask at book events what it was like to grow up so close to Disneyland. It never seemed like a big deal when I was a kid. It was normal to wake up and see my neighbor building enormous floats for the Electric Light Parade. To watch my siblings put on their uniforms to work in the park as a street sweep, balloon handler, or tram assistant. And I’m going to age myself, but it was normal to tear through the booklets for the last of the E tickets (as in e-ticket ride – the best attractions at the park).
What I wouldn’t discover until I started writing years later, was that so much of my childhood memories and experiences were informed by my time at Disneyland. My first stories were about imaginary creatures who lived behind the scenes of The Pirates of The Caribbean, or in the top floors of Sleeping Beauty’s castle. How Tinkerbell was a real fairy who slept in one of the hidden crevices of the Matterhorn. During Halloween, I even wrote about how friendly (not scary) ghosts should take over the Haunted Mansion.
That early creativity informed so much of what I’d write later on. Courageous and daring women like Merida in Brave. Girls chasing their dreams like Rapunzel in Tangled. When I dove into writing romance, I thought about how much I loved the connections between characters in movies like Mary Poppins (come on, you wanted Bert and Mary to be together!) Or how Princess Mia from The Princess Diaries should really end up with Michael – or at least I did!
The power of Disney was always there for me. Just by pushing through a turnstile, I could be transported from my rather mundane life to a magical world. Main Street at one moment could be enchanting in the morning light, but quickly morphed into a thrilling spot once the sun set and nightly fireworks lit the summer sky. Early on, I may not have understood what an impact living so close to Disneyland had on me, but when my writing life began, and stories started to pour out of me, I was reminded of how the experiences of my childhood continue to have such an important reverberation in my creative life today.
