Jamaica Dreams – Book Review

Jamaica Dreams: A Memoir by Rosemarie Robotham

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I picked up “Jamaica Dreams” only because it was written by a relative. I was getting ready to listen to a recent book she had written and came across this one. I was captivated by the first word and read this short memoir in one sitting.

Jamaica Dreams

It is really a collection of short stories from the author’s adolescence. The stories where she is talking about her family were so interesting. Made ever more so by my recognition of the characters – Aunts, uncles and cousins I hold dear. And even the mention of her Uncle Roy who is my grandfather. Since this is a side of the family I know less about since they left the island a long, long time ago I was intrigued by this glimpse into who they were.

The writing is inviting and emotional. Even though I knew the outcome of one of the stories I found myself with tears as she was discussing her fears.

I often get annoyed by authors who have rambling descriptors. But that was not the case here. It was easy to imagine the scenes as she painted them. My only issue was that I wish there had been more stories. I longed to read more.
