Our Dream Home – Book Review

Synopsis – Our Dream Home

Cover Our Dream Home

I never win anything. Not competitions. Not arguments. Not affection from my own children.

Most days, I’m just getting through – dodging teenage sarcasm, scraping fishfingers off plates, wishing my husband would just notice me once in a while.

Then came the emails. Win a car! Win a holiday! Win a house!

Spam, obviously. I blocked them.

But then I heard the radio. A real dream-home giveaway.

And for one moment – stuck between roadworks and honking horns – I let myself want something.

I texted in.

And suddenly my whole life changed.

Now we’re living in a house bigger than my wildest dreams – and my darkest nightmares.

Because the threats started almost immediately. Someone congratulating me . . . by name.

Someone who knows about the mistake that ruined everything sixteen years ago.

They know the truth. They want something from me.

And if I don’t give it to them, my lucky break will become a death sentence.

My Review

Our Dream Home by Jessica Huntley

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

There are so many positive things about this story and a few things that didn’t quite work for me.

To start with the good – the book is a very interesting premise, winning a major prize from a radio station. In addition, it is written in a way that grabs your interest and holds it all the way to the end of the story. All the twists make sense and the story does flow well.

There is mental health representation and the discussion of the anxiety and trichotillomania are well done.

Some of the things that didn’t work for me – the son was written as though he was a little kid but he was 14. That was distracting to me. There were also lots of dates and times that didn’t quite make sense. It feels like in parts it could have done with another round of editing. You do also have to suspend belief for the plot to work. But that’s not really a big deal. It’s typical of the genre.

This is the third book by this author that I have read and she does write engaging stories with unique premises. Her books don’t have the cookie cutter flavor that can sometimes be found in this genre. If you like thrillers, definitely give this one a go.
