Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
“Everyone” loved “Lessons in Chemistry”, but it just did not work for me. 2.5 stars rounded up to 3 because the ending was very satisfying.
I completely respect the premise of the book and understand the struggle of being a minority and fighting for a seat at the table. But I just didn’t connect with the main character. At times I felt the book was boring. I know many describe this as laugh out loud funny. That is a stretch for me, though I definitely chuckled a few times. I was fond of the neighbor character.
I also don’t enjoy stories where human emotions and thoughts are expressed by non-human characters. It is a perfectly acceptable literary strategy but one which does not connect for me. That turned me off in this story.
Despite not loving the book I may try to watch the series. Some of the elements I found annoying may be softened on tv 🤷🏽♀️.
