My son and I did a college tour circuit for a week in California. To kick this off we landed in Los Angeles with a plan to drive to San Diego.
Before we left LA we took a quick stop to in & out burger. The highlight of this for me was the proximity to the airport. While we sat in the very long drive thru line, I was like a kid in the candy store watching the planes taking off and landing right above our heads. He very much enjoyed the burger – we stopped at other In & Out locations before the week was done.
I had originally planned to take the scenic route along the coast but ultimately chose the faster route and headed down the highway. Based on things I had read I was expecting a visually boring ride. I was pleasantly surprised – the drive was lovely.
I’m an island girl so it’s expected that I love the ocean but I also love the mountains. This drive had me in heaven with mountains initially in the distance and then immediately to my left and the ocean to my right.
One of the highlights was seeing Camp Pendleton. I was struck by its sheer magnitude. It felt like I was driving forever and the base was still there. It was fun to see something that I have only known from movies. Irvine was also very, very pretty and not what I had expected.
Most of the planned stops are places I had never visited so I was very excited to set out on this adventure with my son.
