The Vacation House by Jane Shemilt
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
The Vacation House started slow. It’s well written and very descriptive but I found the many characters introduced in the early chapters to be overwhelming. However, I did feel drawn in by the writing.
The story is told in alternating timelines spanning 20 years.
At times I found the story repetitive and too wordy. I did skim some of those sections. The last 20% of the book moves at a very different pace than the lead up.
The Vacation House covers some very heavy topics and though I figured out many of the players relatively early on I still found the way it unfolded to be surprising in parts. There is a deep sadness depicted in some parts of the story. This is definitely not a light, beach read.
It has been a long time since I’ve stayed up late to finish a book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Vacation House though I would not describe it as a thriller.
