Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders by Vincent Bugliosi

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have always been fascinated by serial killers and true-crime is a genre I enjoy. I wanted to listen to Helter Skelter but honestly did not want to devotes 26 hours to it when I felt I was already familiar with the story. I jumped at the opportunity when I saw this abridged version at the library. I enjoy nonfiction on audio.

Helter Skelter is written by the lead prosecutor on the original cases. There was fascinating information about the details of the case as well as the personality of Charles Manson and some of the other defendants.

It was sometimes very hard to keep names straight since there is huge cast of characters involved. In that respect, a print book would likely have been easier. It was staggering to listen to accounts of these killings and how little remorse was shown by most of the people involved.

Despite having read previous books about Manson (for example Manson In His Own Words) and seen several documentaries I was amazed at how much new information I learned from listening to this account.

If you are a true crime fan this one is definitely one to read.
